Tomatoes play their part in your daily health routine - did you know???..
that tomatoes are low fat and filled with Vitimans C and A
that tomatoes are rich in lycopene ? see below. (Lycopersicon lycopersicum is the scientific term for the common tomato).
that botanically, tomatoes are a fruit. This is because generally a fruit is the edible part of the plant that contains the seeds, while a vegetable is the edible stems, leaves, and roots of the plant.
that tomatoes are related to the chilli, capsicums, potato and eggplant familes ? all of which are in turn related to the ?nightshade?family!
What are Lycopenes: Lycopenes are part of the family of pigments called carotenoids, which are natural compounds that create the colors of fruits and vegetables. For example, beta-carotene is the orange pigment in carrots. Like essential amino acids, they are not made in the human body. Research shows that lycopenes are the most powerful antioxidant in the carotenoid family. Antioxidants, which include vitamin C and E, are important in protecting the body from free radicals, which degrade many parts of the body.
What the Researchers have discovered about the ?good health? in tomatoes:
Fighting Cancer: The findings of a Harvard (USA) research study (Dec 1995) suggest that the lycopene content in fresh tomatoes, along with tomato based processed foods, may be especially beneficial regarding prostate cancer risk.
Fighting Cardiovascular Disease: New research conducted by a Newcastle (NSW, Aust) Nutrition and dietetics PhD student (BOP Times August 27th 2004) has found that after drinking 250mls of tomato juice (approx 3 medium sized tomatoes squeezed) everyday for three weeks, a group of people with diabetes experienced a much reduced level of blood clotting activity. It is believed that anyone who develops cardiovascular disease could benefit from this. It is also believe that this can be either a raw or processed tomato product.
General: It is always important to note however, that cancer and heart disease risk, along with may other illnesses, is due to many factors of which a balanced lifystyle of diet and exercise are only a part.
